Is your neck betraying your age? Do you find yourself trying to camouflage your neck with turtlenecks or scarves? Wouldn’t it be great to show your neck proudly once more?
Subtract years from the appearance of your neck by getting rid of the jowls and excess fat around the neck and jawline. Dr. Scott Green, a board-certified plastic surgeon in Sacramento, discusses the surgical techniques used for natural-looking neck results as part of a facial rejuvenation plan.
Understanding Neck Contouring
No matter how much you diet and exercise, there are areas of the body in which stubborn fat remains. That’s especially true of the neck, where aging may also cause sagging skin and the development of vertical muscle bands. “Turkey wattles” may appear.
Neck contouring revitalizes the neck, making you look more attractive, with better definition of the chin and jawline. The procedure may include liposuction, the use of dermal fillers, or surgery for overall neck rejuvenation. The right choice depends on your aesthetic goals.
Facelift Surgery
Dr. Green incorporates elements of neck lift into most of the facelift surgeries that he performs. Although neck lift can be performed as a separate procedure, by the time skin laxity affects the neck, most patients usually have significant signs of aging on the lower face (jowls, fine lines, and wrinkles) as well, making a full facelift the more appropriate choice.
In addition to removing and tightening loose neck skin, Dr. Green may also add platysmaplasty to facelift, which tightens the underlying neck muscles (platysma) and minimizes the vertical banding that appears on the neck with age.
Neck Liposuction
With liposuction, Dr. Green suctions out excess fat from underneath the chin and around the jawline. A minute incision is made beneath the chin and behind both ears. A small tube called a cannula, attached to a suction device, is inserted into the incision and excess fat is suctioned through it.
Expect some swelling and bruising which may take a few months to subside fully. The end result is a more defined jawline without those telltale jowls.
Injectables
For early signs of aging on the neck, Dr. Green can use injectable treatments to make cosmetic improvements. Dermal fillers can help to fill in lines and wrinkles that appear on the neck by reducing skin laxity. Botox can help to relax the platysmal muscles so that they do not appear so prominently through the skin.
