Breast Reduction: What You Can Expect

Although it is always a good idea to set reasonable expectations ahead of having plastic surgery, it is understandable that women get excited to have breast reduction. That is because the motivations to have breast reduction usually extend beyond cosmetic preference.

The good news is that breast reduction meets those high expectations. A study published in the Annals of Plastic Surgery found that 95% of breast reduction patients were not only satisfied with their surgery, but also would choose to undergo it again. In this post, award-winning plastic surgeon Dr. Scott Green explains some of the things you can expect from the procedure.

Breasts That Look Completely Natural

While you may have concerns that surgery will leave your breasts looking artificial in some way, that is not the case. Breast reduction removes excess tissue and skin and does not add anything synthetic. The breasts are still wholly your own, though they are now smaller in size. Most patients agree that their breasts look more natural after surgery since they are in better proportion to their bodies.

It may go without saying, but the appearance of your breasts will also depend on the quality of the surgeon you choose. Not all doctors are equal, so be sure to find someone like Dr. Green who has plenty of before-and-after photos that demonstrate strong work.

Less Discomfort

If you are like most women with large breasts, you probably experience a noticeable amount of pain, mainly focused on the neck, shoulder and back region. Moreover, in many cases skin irritation develops around the bra straps and beneath the folds of the breasts. Once your breast tissue is removed, you will be carrying around a lot less weight, which should relieve most of that pain. For many, the skin irritation goes away as well.

An Easier Time Moving

It is important to avoid strenuous activity for at least one month after your surgery, but once your surgeon gives you the thumbs up, you are free to start exercising again. You may be shocked at how much easier it is to engage in physical activities with smaller breasts. Jogging and certain sports that may have been out of the question even with the help of a sports bra are suddenly so much more accessible— and that may serve as an incentive to a start a fitness journey.
