Eyelid Surgery, Is It Worth It? Research Shows Improved Quality of Life

Loose eyelid skin and puffy under-eye bags make you appear tired and older than your actual age. Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, is a plastic surgery that restores the eyelid’s appearance by removing excess skin tissue, tightening underlying tissues and muscles and readjusting fat pockets inside the eyelids. Researchers have looked into the psychological benefits of eyelid surgery in patients who chose to have the procedure and found it improves their overall quality of life, especially if the patient’s vision was affected by the sagging skin.

Dr. Scott Green is a board-certified plastic surgeon specializing in facial rejuvenation, including eyelid surgery. He will evaluate your eyelids and develop a surgical approach to eliminate sagging skin and other eyelid concerns.

Research on Eyelid Surgery and Patient Satisfaction

2019 study aimed to determine the effect of eyelid surgery on self-esteem, emotional stability and quality of life in 123 patients who completed a survey after blepharoplasty. Researchers reported:

  • 44 patients experienced a positive change in their personal wellbeing.
  • 33 felt more satisfied with their facial appearance.
  • 20 were more self-confident than before the procedure.
  • 25 said they felt more attractive after eyelid surgery.

The patients involved showed an improvement in quality of life regarding their work, mobility and independence. Ultimately concluding that blepharoplasty improves “personal wellbeing, self-esteem and different aspects of their daily life.”

A previous study focused on the functional benefits of upper blepharoplasty and patient satisfaction rates. The 2017 research evaluated 45 patients (90 eyelids) after eyelid surgery, with 34 women and 11 men. Researchers reported that 31.3 percent experienced upper visual field improvement in the right eye and 28.3 percent in the left. Every patient said they would have the procedure again and was satisfied with their results.

Blepharoplasty can improve quality of life and self-confidence, whether the procedure is performed for vision impairment and/or cosmetic concerns.

Blepharoplasty Procedure

Dr. Green offers eyelid surgery to get rid of the excess tissue and improve cosmetic concerns in the upper and lower eyelids. The procedure improves lines and wrinkles in the eye area and provides for a well-rested appearance. Blepharoplasty is performed under IV sedation with local anesthesia, so you are drowsy and pain-free but awake and unaware of the ongoing procedure. Dr. Green may recommend combining eyelid surgery with brow lift or facelift if you have other facial concerns.

After eyelid surgery, patients may experience tightness, swelling and bruising and should keep their heads elevated to reduce these symptoms. After eight to 10 days, most of the bruising and swelling should be gone. Make sure to follow Dr. Green’s post-surgical instructions and wait to resume strenuous exercise and activities until he’s cleared you to do so (typically two to three weeks).
