Reasons Liposuction Is So Popular

While the number of body contouring procedures available to patients has multiplied over the past decade, liposuction remains the most popular option. This cosmetic surgery, designed to remove unwanted fat cells from the body, has stood the test of time. Board certified plastic surgeon Scott Green shares why liposuction is one of the most popular surgeries he offers to his Sacramento and Granite Bay patients:

It Remains the Most Effective Way to Remove Fat Deposits

While less-invasive procedures are successful at removing fat cells, the simple fact is that they are not capable of removing as many fat cells as liposuction. For results that are the most dramatic, there is no substitution for a surgical procedure like liposuction.

It Works on Many Parts of the Body

Liposuction can safely be done on most parts of the body. Dr. Green regularly performs liposuction on the abdomen, flanks, back, neck, chin, upper arms, thighs and ankles. Better still, patients who have more than one “problem area” can usually have liposuction performed on multiple areas during a single operation.

The Recovery Is Relatively Easy for a Surgery

Because liposuction is a type of surgery, the recovery and downtime are certainly more significant than what patients experience when they choose a minimally invasive procedure. However, most liposuction patients experience only mild to moderate pain following their surgery, which is easy to manage with help from prescription painkillers or over-the-counter pain relievers. Generally speaking, liposuction patients are able to return to their jobs within a week — often just a few days later.

The Scarring Is Minimal

Any surgery requires incisions, which then creates scarring. Fortunately, the incisions that are made to insert the cannula for liposuction are so small and usually heal well enough that scars are not plainly visible on your body.

It Addresses Pockets of Fat a Healthy Lifestyle Does Not

While dieting and exercising remain the best ways to shed unwanted weight, many people who commit to healthy habits still discover that stubborn pockets of fat cling to areas of their body. That is because stubborn fat is often physiologically distinct from ordinary fat. Fat cells contain different amounts of alpha-2 and beta-2 receptors, and those with higher concentrations of alpha-2 receptors are harder to eliminate naturally. Liposuction, however, can target these alpha-2 rich fat cells without any problems.

The Results Are Permanent

The aspect that patients consider the most appealing is that the fat eliminated through liposuction is gone forever. Unlike some other cosmetic procedures that require periodic treatments to maintain the results, liposuction removes fat cells permanently. However, not every single fat cell can be removed, therefore it is still possible that fat can accumulate in areas that have been liposuctioned. If one maintains their weight with proper diet and exercise, these areas will maintain the contours achieved from liposuction.
